The Shroud of Turin

There has been a wave of high expectations that many are riding on, and are being led to believe that the Shroud, showing a full body imprint is that of Jesus Christ? There has been the typical various reasons as to why this Shroud is legitimate? Some give all kinds of reasons and speculative evidence that the Shroud is indeed that of Jesus Christ?

Then, there are those like me that do not believe that this Shroud of Turin is legitimate at all? As much as I want to give my opinion as to why I don’t believe it to be true, I want to serve up some actual Scriptures that will undeniably show that this Shroud is a fraud, a fake, and of someone’s evil desire to not just mislead, and lie, but hope to hit the jackpot with it?

I will simply offer up some Scriptural verses that should turn any Shroud of Turin believer or fence-sitter into a non-believing believer.

John 19:1 So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.
John 19:3  Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck Him with their hands.

First thing, we know that Jesus was flogged, or whipped ferociously, which undoubtedly cause welts that would emboss the skin. It would also leave evidence of scars immediately and plenty of blood streaks and patches. When you observe the Shroud, you can see that the body is pretty much intact and not showing any obvious scourging marks or blood spots of any kind. We know that they put a twisted crown of thorns upon His head which would have also caused thorn pricks around His head and more noticeably His forehead. Again, when you view the Shroud, the head area is clear from any such marks and streams of blood that would have streamed down His face as well as His sides and back. If you also view the sides of the body, you don’t see where there would have been a hole made by the spear of a Roman soldier. You also don’t see the face swollen or bruised from being punched and hit. Now a major point is, the fact that they had pulled Jesus’ beard out from His face, which would have become so swollen and bloody, it would have undoubtedly left His face unrecogniseable and very disfigured. And once again, the face on the Shroud appears to have the beard intact, no eye damage or swollenness and no sign of any serious facial injuries of that magnitude. To me, this is a very clear proof of how fraudulent the Shroud is. By the way, the verse regarding the beard is here.
Isaiah 50:6  I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.

John 19:40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.

When Joseph of Arimathea came for the body of Jesus, they bound His body with strips of linen and put spices which is a Jewish custom.

John 20:5 And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in.
John 20:6  Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there,
John 20:7  and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself.

One last major thing is that when two of the disciples came to the sepulchre to see if Jesus was there or gone, they saw linen cloths lying on the floor. NOTE: cloths, as in plural, as opposed to that one shroud cloth. Also, note that there was a separate head covering as well. There was a separate handkerchief that had been around His head which was folded and in a place by itself! This separate head piece would have left an imprint on that Shroud as well if indeed the Shroud was legitimate!
